Penis Enlargement Explained

There are many reasons that males desire a larger penis size. Some want their partners to feel more satisfaction during sexual activities; others want a penis enlargement to have more self-confidence. For whatever the reason a man has for wanting a larger member, many various medicines, surgeries, herbs, and medicines have been around that claim to do just that. Some techniques are completely bogus scams, while others do have measurable effects. Some of these effects are short term lasting less than an hour, while some are permanent changes to the male sex organ.

The average male penis length is between 4 and 6 inches erect. When in its flaccid state, size may vary greatly. In fact, males that appear to have a shorter flaccid penis will grow more into the erect state than males with larger un-erect penis. This has to do with the two components that make up the size of the penis. The first is the underlying tissues, and the second is the skin that covers the tissue. When a male becomes aroused and erect, there is an increase in blood flow to the erectile tissue which makes the penis stiffer and bigger. Several penis enlargement techniques use this principle to enhance penis size.

The most common penis enlargement method is the use of a penis pump. With the pump, the user places his penis into an air tight cylinder, and proceeds to remove the air out of the cylinder with a hand or electronic pump. This creates a vacuum inside the cylinder which will draw extra blood into the penile tissue. This makes the penis erect and also bigger than it would be during a normal erection due to the extra blood flow. The user also then needs to apply a ring to the base of the penis before removing the pump so that it prevents the blood from re-entering the body. Once the ring is removed, the penis will go back to normal size.
An assortment of herbs, creams and supplements are available that claim to do the same thing naturally without the use of any sort of device. Unfortunately, no natural or herbal supplement has been shown to have any real effects on penis size. There are some users who claim success with use of these supplements without any kind of true growth. These could be men that suffer from a psychiatric condition known as penile dysmorphic disorder who believe that their penis is too small even though it is normal size or larger. This condition resembles a penile form of anorexia, and men who suffer from this might claim that herbal treatments work, but in reality they are just convincing themselves with some help from the placebo effect.

Some legitimate and permanent surgical methods do exist that have the effect of penis enlargement, some of them being more risky than others. The first method which actually increases the length of the penis is done by surgically cutting a ligament called the suspensory ligament. This ligament holds some of shaft of the penis inside the body and by cutting the ligament; more of the shaft becomes visible. This method can increase the outward size of the penis by up to two inches. The other technique increases the girth of the penis by actually implanting cadaver tissue into the penis in order to widen it. Though this may widen the penis, a possible loss of overall length is a side effect. A third surgical option is when fat tissue at the base of the penis is surgically removed, leaving the appearance of a longer shaft. There are of course risks to any surgery including the ones mentioned above. Scaring and loss of function are some of the possible complications that should be considered.
By understanding how penis enlargement works, men will hopefully be able to make the decision that is right for them.
